On 30th November 2023, the community leader (cacique) of a specific Guaraní community on the Atlantic coast of Brazil in Maricá, state of Rio de Janeiro, Darcy Tupã Nunes, and French militant for indigenous rights Delphine Fabbri-Lawson gave a conference on "Indigenous Struggles & Multinationals: Brazil Guarani Case" for international business students in Grenoble Ecole de Management, France. Professor Michelle Mielly hosted the conference.
Over the past 11 years a massive development project for a multi hotel, multi-million-dollar eco-tourism resort (named ‘Maraey’ – a name co-opted from Guarani culture signifying ‘sacred land’) has been elaborated between the municipal government and IDB Brasil (a subsidiary of CETYA from Navarro). The Aldeia Mata Verde community was not informed up front of these plans, which continued in the background for years.
What can young business students learn from this case? What inspiration of future business models they can receive?
